Men's Soccer Wins Again, Ties Two Records

POMONA, Calif. - Tuesday night marked an important day for the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos as their 2-0 win over the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds also marked a tie for two school records.

Three times in Bronco men's soccer program history the team has tallied a total of 12 wins on the season, the last of which was in 1998. The 1998 team also set the school record for shutouts with nine.

By shutting down Fresno Pacific's PacWest-leading offense and registering two goals of their own, the CPP squad tied both of those records.

The Broncos improve to a still undefeated 12-0-1. Fresno Pacific has now tallied a 8-3 record through its season.

"We are obviously excited about another W and the great effort tonight," said head coach Yossi Raz. "We were able to tie an old record for both wins and shutouts that the program has been holding since 1998. This obviously shows a little bit of the defensive end and a little bit of the attacking effort and how well rounded this team is. So we were very excited that we were able to compete and play as well as we did today."

Junior defender Kris Korich from Chino Hills proved to be a massive threat for the Broncos offensively as he scored his first two goals of the season.

Through the first half hour of play neither team gained much of an advantage. In the 32nd minute, Mathew Perez and Abiel Coronado provided Korich with the scoring opportunity from the right side. Korich fired one by the Sunbirds' goalie and found the net as his shot deflected off the post to give the Broncos the 1-0 lead.

The CPP offense took a total of six shots in the first half, while its defense allowed only two opposition shots.

The second half started much like the first, with such a strong showing from both sides that no clear leader was emerging. In much the same fashion as the first, that tune changed as the Broncos' offense found a spark and ran with it. The second half saw the CPP offense shooting eight times.

After a few tough breaks for the Broncos, Korich would come through again. After Daniel Asor sent a pass to Luis Najera Jr., the Tulare native found Korich open in front of the goal. For his second goal of the season, Korich slotted the ball to the right of FPU's goalkeeper thereby sealing the Sunbirds' fate.

"We feel that we performed well," Raz said, "especially in the second half. We created a lot of opportunities and are excited that we were able to manage with a win and represent the CCAA well against another great conference."

Both the Sunbirds and the Broncos found themselves with only one corner kick throughout the match. Minding the net, Fernando Pablo Quevedo added two more saves to his tally, bringing him up to 36 on the season.

The Broncos' next match will be a road game against San Francisco State on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
