POMONA, Calif. - Having won three of its last four matches and the past two contests, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team will return to action in Northern California this weekend as the Broncos look to build on their momentum.
At 8-6 overall and 6-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Broncos are tied for sixth place in the conference standings. Starting the second half of the regular season this weekend, CPP challenges 10th-place Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and 7th-place Chico State on Saturday. Both road matches are set to start at 7 p.m.
The Broncos continue to be one of the top blocking teams in the league, averaging 2.46 blocks per set to rank second in the CCAA behind Cal State San Bernardino.
Christen Williams and
Alexa Hasen are within the top five individually for that statistic.
Hasen put together a pair of impressive performances last weekend in the home wins over Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay. On Friday, she totaled nine kills and five blocks with an attack percentage of .429. The next night, she collected 16 kills with a hitting percentage of .682 that put her at No. 5 in the program's single-match leaderboard.
Junior libero
Zoe Herrera continues to help the Broncos' defensive efforts as she's reached 30-consecutive matches with 10 or more digs. Her season best in that stat is the 32 digs she collected at UC San Diego on Sept. 17. Among CCAA players, Herrera ranks sixth in digs per set.
The Broncos are already familiar with this week's opponents as CPP opened the conference regular season with home matchups against the Warriors and Wildcats. It proved to be a weekend split as the Broncos lost 3-2 to Chico and then topped Stanislaus 3-0 the following day.
CPP's next home match won't be until Friday, Oct. 31, but it'll be a big one. The Broncos will host the league-leading Sonoma State squad on "Pack the Stands" night at Kellogg Gym and the event will feature several Halloween-themed promotions.
