SAN FRANCISCO – The 2014 Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team will go down in the record books as being the most successful team the program has ever had and with plenty of games left to play, the complete story is still unfolding. Friday's double-overtime 1-0 win over the San Francisco Gators marked the breaking of two 16-year-old records.
"I am excited for this group to be able to write their name in the history books for CPP men's soccer," said head coach
Yossi Raz. "With how hard and how well they play, this team deserves to be recognized and remembered for many years."
The win improved the Broncos to a 13-0-1 overall record on the year and again secures their place at the top of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a perfect 7-0 tally.
With their first home loss of the season, the Gators fall to a 5-6-2 mark thus far in 2014, while owning a 1-6-1 record in conference. Five of their six losses have been by a single goal.
The 1998 CPP men's soccer team held 12 wins on the season and also set the program record with an impressive nine shutouts.
After 16 years of that record holding strong, the Broncos can proudly hoist a new flag as the 2014 team has now tallied 13 wins and 10 shutouts. The win also improves the CPP squad to 12-consecutive victories.
"I feel like the environment challenged our mental strength," said Raz. "I'm really proud of the men for being able to stay with the game, and prevail in spite of the difficult circumstances. This was a tough road match against a tough CCAA opponent. The leadership of the group and the determination of the team were superb today."
Through both the first two halves and the first overtime, fans at Cox Arena had to endure shot after shot that were unable to find the back of the net. Minus the game ending shot, the Broncos shot 14 times, while their San Franciscan opponents fired away 12.
Leading the way with the most shots on goal for CPP was the NCAA's assist leader
Daniel Garcia Jr. and Broncos lethal newcomer
Armando Ochoa. Both members of the CPP squad held two shots on goal.
It was not until double-overtime, just 3:44 in, when the Broncos would earn their record-setter. The junior forward from Ghana,
Alexander Turkson took his one and only shot of the day, and it proved to be a deadly one. Ochoa found an open Turkson, who fired one into the upper right corner of the net to give the Broncos the hard-fought victory.
The Broncos ever vigilant defense held its ground as the San Francisco offense, who, prior to the game, averaged 1.17 goals per game. In the net,
Fernando Pablo Quevedo registered 5 saves for the Broncos.
CPP will continue its road trip at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. as they take on the Otters. CSUMB will be hosting the Broncos after a 0-0 tie against the Tritons of UC San Diego.
