SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos continue their spectacular season as they secured a 3-0 road win Sunday against the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters.
The Broncos' victory means that the undefeated season remains alive as CPP now holds a 14-0-1 record overall while it preserves its first place standing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a spotless 8-0 tally. The result also secures CPP a spot in the conference playoffs and with that impressive achievement, it'll mark just the program's second appearance at that stage.
With the loss, CSUMB falls to an overall 2-7-4 record and owns a 1-5-2 tally in the CCAA.
CPP wasted no time getting on the board as just 45 seconds in,
Armando Ochoa found the back of the net. The goal was Ochoa's fourth of the season and it gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead over the Otters.
Daniel Asor found an open
Kris Korich who passed the ball to Ochoa. The junior from Riverside slotted the ball to the left past the CSUMB netminder and gave the CPP squad an early lead.
A mere 18 minutes later, the Broncos found themselves with another point on the board as
Alexander Turkson scored his sixth of the season.
Kris Korich would provide a key assist again as he found Turkson ready and open. The Bronco from Ghana popped the ball over the Otters goalie to give CPP the 2-0 lead.
Without giving CSUMB much time to regroup, the Broncos' squad took advantage of yet another scoring opportunity. Just 44 seconds after Turkson's goal, the Broncos' leading scorer,
Christian Gonzalez Diaz, added on a security goal for CPP.
Mathew Perez earned the assist on the goal. Gonzalez Diaz went one-on-one against the Otters' goalkeeper and deked past him and put the ball in the right side of the net. The goal was his eighth of the year.
During the second half, the scoring settled down as both teams were blanked. The game marked the 11th shutout of the year for the Broncos, who continue to add on to their record-setting season.
At the culmination of the game, the Broncos had 15 shots to the Otters' 12, and led CSUMB in shots on goal 10-3.
The Otters' goalkeeper had a total of seven saves on the game while
Fernando Pablo Quevedo added another shutout to his tally for the year while adding three saves.
"We did a great job coming to another difficult CCAA environment," said head coach
Yossi Raz. "Our team was able to brilliantly handle the situations that Monterey threw at us. We have to move on from here and make sure that we sustain our level of play, and recover well as we head into the next game."
The Broncos' next match will be on Friday as they travel north to Humboldt to take on the Jacks at 3 p.m.
