ARCATA, Calif. – With playoffs less than 10 days away for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team is making its presence known. On Friday in Arcata, the Broncos recorded their fifth-straight shutout victory as they defeated the Humboldt State Jacks 2-0.
The shutout streak matches a program record and with the result, the CPP squad improves 11-4 overall and 6-3 in conference play. HSU falls to 6-9 overall while going 1-8 in league action. Although not every CCAA team has concluded play Friday, the Broncos have jumped into a tie for second place with Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino.
CPP found the back of the net in the 11th minute as
Alison Sauve kicked the ball from 20 yards out and guided it to the left of the Jacks' netminder. The goal marked her fourth of the year. She was set up for the goal by the Broncos' assist leader
Indra Arteaga, who earned her fifth assist on the season.
Continuing with the trend, Arteaga would again record an assist as she found an open
Melissa Martinez in the 25th minute. From there Martinez would take to the right side of the field and boot it into the left half of the goal from 25 yards out. The goal marked her fifth of the year, and gave her a tie with
Daisy Duran as CPP's leading scorer.
"I feel we played a great first half," said head coach
Mike Dibbini. "Our team came out of the gate playing really well. Early in the game we saw a couple good quality goals. We controlled the game for the most part. In the second half we played well at moments, but I feel we managed the game more in the first half."
The second half found the two teams holding their own as the goals remained empty of soccer balls. Through the game, the Broncos took a total of 10 shots and held the Jacks to four.
"We are playing well," said Dibbini. "We are making strides to improve every game and I like our chances. We just have to continue to play our game and stick to the plan."
The Broncos will attempt for their sixth-straight win on Sunday as they travel to Sonoma State to take on the Seawolves at 11:30 a.m.
