LOS ANGELES – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team dropped its first match since Oct. 4 on Friday as the Broncos fell 3-1 to the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles. The Broncos won the first set 25-17, then were topped in the next three 25-22, 25-22, and 25-21.
Despite the Broncos holding strong stats through the whole match, CSULA held out and earned the four-set victory.
CPP now holds a 10-7 overall record on the season, and owns a 8-6 tally in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
Upon earning the win, the Golden Eagles now hold a 11-6 spot in 2014, which includes a 9-5 mark in conference.
Set one showed the teams trading the lead until the Broncos went ahead 9-7. They were able to maintain the lead throughout the course of the set and defeat the Golden Eagles 25-17.
The second set started fairly even, but CSULA was able to make a couple of runs which would put them four points in front. CPP made a run of its own and tied up the set at 18, 19, and 20. LA caught a couple of breaks some Bronco errors gave them the lead that they held through the set.
As seems to be customary with these two competitive CCAA teams, the third set was another back-and-forth rally. After many quality points, CSULA tied the set at 21, after which the Broncos were unable to come back.
Set three started in a promising manner as the Broncos posted three on the board before the Golden Eagles could answer back. CPP was able to hold the lead until the eight point. From there, the set traded leaders until the home team gained the 16-15 edge, a lead the Broncos would chase through the rest of the match.
Captain
Lauren Jones led the Broncos with 13 kills, she also added 14 points, a .345 attack percentage, and two blocks.
Alexa Hasen brought a strong game as she chalked up a .444 attack percentage, 13 points, 11 kills, and four blocks.
The very definition of an impact player, freshman
Deanna Blaine provided 14.5 points for the CPP offense, which included 12 kills, a service ace, and two blocks.
Moving up in the Bronco record-book, junior libero
Zoe Herrera added 18 digs in the match, which takes her career total to 947 and moves her into 8th place. She trails the No. 7 spot by just 23 digs.
The CSULA win means the two teams have split their regular season matchup 1-1.
CPP will return to action Saturday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros will be hosting the Broncos after getting swept by the UC San Diego Tritons.
