CARSON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team earned a sweep Saturday night, as they defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Toro Dome. CPP won set one 25-14, earned a 25-17 victory in set two, and secured the set and the match with a 25-19 tally in set three.
With the victory, the Broncos improve to an overall total of 11-7 on the season, which includes a 9-6 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Cal State Dominguez Hills registers a 1-14 in conference and holds a 2-17 mark on the season.
CPP's offense had a fierce outing as five Broncos posted a hitting percentage of .300 or better.
Alexa Hasen led the hitting percentage category with a .471 tally.
Lauren Jones followed at .385,
Madison May took third with a .333,
Deanna Blaine held a .323, and
Christen Williams earned a .300.
Blaine emerged as the clear point leader as 14 kills helped her on her way to 17 points. Hasen followed with 10 kills and 12.5 points of her own. Williams was good for 8.5 points and eight kills, and Jones owned seven points while amassing six kills.
Nicoletta Stork led the way with 27 assists for CPP, while
Alina Smith recorded 18 of her own.
At eighth in the record book,
Zoe Herrera's 18 digs puts her just five shy of seventh place on the all-time career digs list. Junior libero
Tatiana Martinez chalked up 13 digs for herself.
The Broncos jumped into an early lead in set one, and didn't relinquish it as they cruised to a 25-14 victory. CPP had two big runs where they earned six and five points.
CSUDH came alive in the second set, as all of the early Bronco points were hard earned, the teams traded the lead a few times until the Broncos went ahead 17-16 and held the lead through the rest of the set. The final tally in set two.
The third and final set looked to be in the bag early as the Broncos quickly took an 8-1 lead. Not to be outdone the Toros answered back and soon tied it up at 10. Then it was the Broncos turn to play catch up, as CSUDH lead for the next few points. CPP caught up at 15 and went ahead, and the Broncos pushed forward to earn a 25-19 third-set victory.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. at Kellogg Gym. They will take on the Seawolves of Sonoma State.
Friday is not only a volleyball game, but also marks the annual "Pack the Stands" night, and falls on Halloween. All Broncos fans are encouraged to don a costume as prizes for costumes will be awarded.
