ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – After a hard fought match Sunday, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team was dealt its first loss of 2014. The Sonoma State Seawolves defeated the Broncos 2-1 after a goal in overtime gave them the win.
"Our team approached the game with the wrong state of mind," said head coach
Yossi Raz. "We played a talented team with great tradition, and our mental sharpness was not there to secure the win on such a difficult road trip. Clearly we have more work to do in order to improve."
The Broncos remain at the helm of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a 9-1 record, while owning a 15-1-1 tally on the season.
With the win, Sonoma improved to an overall mark of 8-7-2, which includes a 3-5-2 conference tally.
Sunday's matchup saw the Seawolves first on the scoreboard as Dane Shaffar scored his first career goal as a Seawolf in the 21st minute.
CPP took a total of three shots in the first period, none of which were able to find the net, however, as the hometown defense blanked the Broncos' offense. Halftime came about with the Broncos trailing 1-0.
The second half showed some life for the tenacious Broncos' offense, as the Broncos took aim six times for the SSU net, five of those shots were within two minutes of each other.
For the second time in as many games,
Daniel Garcia Jr. came in clutch for CPP, as he scored in the waning minutes to send the game to overtime.
Garcia's goal came after a well-placed cross from
Luis Najera Jr. left the senior open to send the ball into the Seawolves' net. The goal marked Garcia Jr.'s second goal of the season, and Najera Jr.'s third assist of 2014.
As the Broncos' defense held on for the rest of the game, the two teams were sent into overtime with a 1-1 tie.
Overtime began with both teams vying for the golden goal. Two minutes in, the Seawolves found themselves on the advantageous side of a foul just outside the Broncos' box. A quick place and pass, and Michel Arroyo provided Sonoma with the go ahead goal that handed CPP its first loss.
The Broncos will return to action as their senior day will be an exciting one. Thursday's match against the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles will be for the CCAA crown, as both the Broncos and CSULA own a 9-1 conference record. Thursday, as mentioned, will also be senior day, as we celebrate the careers and accomplishments of the CPP seniors. The game is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Kellogg Field
