Broncos Earn #3 Seed in CCAA! Tie LA 2-2

POMONA, Calif. - Entering Thursday's matchup, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos knew they would be facing the most successful defense in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Trailing 2-0 with just about six minutes to play in regulation, CPP scored twice against the nationally-ranked Golden Eagles and ended up earning a 2-2 draw.

The final equalizer came at the 88:58 mark off the foot of fourth-year midfielder Alison Sauve, fitting for Senior Night at Kellogg Field.

The tie means the Broncos end the regular season with a 7-3-1 conference record, and a 12-4-1 overall tally. Their record earned them the No. 3 seed in the CCAA tournament.

CSULA remains undefeated at the helm of the CCAA, with a 9-0-2 mark, good for a 14-1-3 mark in 2014.

"Tonight definitely showed a lot of character on our part," said head coach Mike Dibbini. "With five minutes remaining we took risks and set numbers forward and our girls overcame a lot of adversity. I am proud of the girls for playing as hard as they did and for not giving up."

The Golden Eagles found the net early on in the first half, with only 11 minutes gone on the board, Krystal Kutscher took a long shot from the corner that made its way past the Broncos defense and into the net. She was assisted by Justine Telles and Veronika Steen. The goal put CSULA ahead 1-0.

The two teams entered halftime with the score holding at 1-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles. The Broncos had only shot twice to CSULA's six. Ricki Ives, the Broncos' netminder had one save in the half.

Nearly 25 minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles would add to their score as a penalty kick for Amalia Arvidsson made its way past Ives. The goal gave CSULA a 2-0 lead.

With a flair for the dramatic, the Broncos held off until the clock showed 4:01 to put a number on the board. A free kick from Edith Dominguez from 20 yards out provided what was only CSULA's second conference goal allowed all season. It was her first goal as a Bronco.

Down 2-1, and nearly in the final minute of play, the Broncos pulled even as a cross from Arika Ontiveros found Alison Sauve open and ready to send the game into overtime as she sent one past the Golden Eagles' goalkeeper. The goal was Sauve's fifth, and earning it pulled her even with the CPP goal leaders.

Overtime saw both teams battling hard for an advantage that neither team found. CSULA shot once in overtime, while the Broncos added four shots to their total. When all was said and done, the CPP squad had 11 shots on the night, while the Golden Eagles registered 13.

"We are very excited looking forward," said Dibbini. "Tonight's match showed the caliber of teams that we will be up against."

Looking forward the Broncos host UC San Diego on Sunday in the first round of the CCAA playoffs. UC San Diego earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament on Thursday as they blanked the CSU Dominguez Hills Toros 3-0.
