CPP Advances to CCAA Semifinals With 2-0 Win!

POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team advanced to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships semifinal round with a 2-0 win over the UC San Diego Tritons on Sunday.

The Broncos' win improves them to an overall tally of 13-4-1 in 2014. As the playoffs continue, CPP turns its sights on Turlock.

With the one-and-done playoff scenario, the UCSD Tritons complete their season with an overall mark of 9-6-3.

"It was a great collective effort from both sides today," said head coach Mike Dibbini. "Our team showed tremendous focus and great character. It is a difficult thing to do to win twice against the same team in the CCAA."

Arguably the star of the game for the Broncos, freshman goalkeeper Ricki Ives totaled four saves in the net as she kept the scoreboard free of any Triton goals.

CPP's first goal occurred early on as a pass across the box from Daisy Duran found an open Arika Ontiveros. The senior from Lancaster sent her shot careening into the upper right corner of the goal, giving the Broncos the eventual game-winning goal.

Nearly 10 minutes later, the Tritons looked to be on the brink of scoring as a foul in the Broncos' box gave UCSD a penalty kick. Cassie Callahan, owner of four goals on the year, booted the ball toward the left half of the net. Ives remained alert and focused as she dove to her right and prevented the Tritons from tying the game.

As the sizable crowd at Kellogg Field witnessed Ives earn the block, the announcer's voice was drowned out by chants of "Ricki, Ricki, Ricki…", a cheer that would be repeated more than once.

The first half saw San Diego take a total of seven shots on goal, while the Broncos registered six of their own.

CPP earned its second goal as an offensive push by the Broncos saw a few shots within a few minutes. Megan Kisslan passed the ball to Hailey James, who deked past the Tritons' goalie to find an open net, and give the Broncos a security goal. Her goal gave the CPP squad the end game result of 2-0.

Much like the first half, the Tritons outshot CPP 7-6, yet the Bronco defense held firm and allowed zero goals in the match.

The Broncos next match will take place in Turlock at the CCAA Semifinals on Nov. 7 at 11 a.m.,  as they take on the second-seeded Chico Wildcats.
