Broncos Top San Francisco in Home Sweep

POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona volleyball earned a sweep over San Francisco State on Saturday. The Broncos took set one 25-21, earned a 25-21 victory in set two, and a match ending 25-20 in the third set.

Securing the win improved the Broncos to an overall tally of 12-9, which includes a 10-7 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

With CPP topping the Gators, the SFSU squad falls to 8-9 in conference while owning a 10-12 mark thus far in 2014.

After the match began with a service error by CPP, the Broncos quickly jumped back. The Broncos, upon earning the lead early on, held fiercely to the advantage, and never allowed the Gators to get a leg up. The Broncos ended the set 25-20 with a kill by Deanna Blaine.

Set two began much to the same beat as the first set. CPP jumped in front early, and never allowed the Gators to do so much as tie up the score. SFSU managed to come within a point of the Broncos on seven separate occasions but never pulled even. CPP registered their final point, to end the set at 25-21, on an attack error by the Gators.

SFSU showed a spark of life in the third and final set, they gained the advantage early on by scoring three straight to begin the set. The CPP squad pushed back a bit and managed to pull even with the Gators at seven apiece. The leader changed sides for the next few points until the Broncos evened it up at 13-13. From the next point on, CPP did not relinquish the lead. A couple runs later and the Broncos secured the set and the match at 25-20.

Nicoletta Stork led the Broncos offensively with 14 kills and a .500 attack percentage. Deanna Blaine was hot on her trail with 12 kills to her name, as acting as the CPP dig leader with 12 digs. Zoe Herrera moves into seventh place in the Bronco Record Book with 978 career digs.

"We very pleased with our ball control tonight," said head coach Rosie Wegrich. "We had wonderful stats in the first set and it was great to see us hit as well as we did.  The teams you play learn through the match, and San Francisco picked up on some of our moves. We have to get better at maintaining a high level of offensive consistency. Overall though I was very proud of our squad, and especially Nico, who ran a very good offense."

The Broncos return to action on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m., as they host the UC San Diego Tritons at Kellogg Gym. UCSD holds a 12-9 overall mark, which includes a 10-7 tally in the CCAA. They will be coming to CPP after falling in three sets to Sonoma State.
