Stork Lifts Broncos to 3-1 Win over UCSD

POMONA, Calif. - With Nicoletta Stork leading the way, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team secured a 3-1 victory over UC San Diego on Wednesday at Kellogg Gym.

Before the Military Appreciation match, the Cal Poly Pomona ROTC presented the colors and Faith Ruehlman sang the national anthem. Fans received mini flags and any current or prior service members were given special Bronco Military Appreciation t-shirts.

CPP volleyball eked out a 27-25 result in game one before cruising to a lopsided 25-11 score in the second game. After UCSD rallied for a 25-23 win in the third frame, CPP bounced back with a 25-22 finale to wrap up the match.

The two teams entered the day with a matching record in conference play but now the Broncos improved to 11-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Tritons fall to 10-8. On a two-match winning streak, CPP has moved up to fifth place in the league standings.

Stork continues to be a versatile player for the Broncos and on Wednesday, she collected 24 kills and 23 assists with a .548 hitting percentage. Alina Smith finished with 33 assists while Zoe Herrera and Tatiana Martinez led the defensive effort with dig totals of 21 and 18, respectively.

As a team, CPP totaled 11 blocks and Christen Williams collected five of her own.

In the opening game, the Broncos faced a 25-24 deficit before rattling off three-consecutive points. Two of those points came from Stork kills on assists by Smith. CPP earned a sizeable lead in the second game, thanks in part to a long serving run from Alexa Hasen. She served 11-consecutive points to help the Broncos turn a slim 6-4 advantage into a 17-4 gap. Lauren Jones recorded three-straight kills later in the frame to help the CPP offense.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth in the fourth game. CPP won three of the final four points and fittingly, Stork notched two kills in that span.

The Broncos will continue their homestand with a Friday match against Humboldt State. Senior Night will be on Saturday.
