Broncos Topped by Point Loma in Opener, 63-60

AZUSA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered a 63-60 loss to Point Loma in the season opener Friday.

On day one of the Crossover Classic held at Azusa Pacific, the Broncos and Sea Lions battled down the final buzzer. PLNU extended its lead to five points with 13 seconds to play, but then Erin Hagan dropped in a layup moments later.

With five seconds left, the Sea Lions' Alex Brunk missed the front end of a one-and-one. The Broncos rushed the ball down the court but Jada Blackwell's three-point at the buzzer didn't connect.

Blackwell finished with a team-high 24 points, including a stellar 10-for-12 effort at the free throw line. Ariel Marsh joined her in double figures with 11 points to go along with two assists and two steals. Marsh tossed in three triples and the Broncos went 6-for-16 from beyond the arc as a team.

PLNU put together an even stronger showing from long distance, knocking down nine of their 23 attempts. Jessica Escorza and Madison West combined to score 38 of the Sea Lions' 63 points with West hitting six three-pointers.

The two teams traded the lead seven times throughout the contest. Seven minutes into the game, a Marsh three-pointer gave CPP its first lead at 9-8. PLNU grabbed the advantage right back though as West responded with a triple of her own.

In the final minute of the opening half, Ashley Lovett knocked down a jumper to give the Broncos a 27-26 edge going into halftime. Lauren Goecke delivered an assist on that Lovett basket.

Blackwell and Marsh put together some strong shooting early in the second half and at the 7:27 mark, CPP's lead widened to five points. The Sea Lions finished strong though and escaped with the three-point win.

CPP will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. game against the host APU squad.
