Broncos Play Hard But Fall 1-0 To Chico

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team's run to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship match was stopped short as a double overtime 1-0 win for Chico Friday afternoon sends the Wildcats ahead to Sunday's title match.

CPP, after the loss still holds a 13-5-1 record on the year, which encompasses a 1-1 mark in the CCAA Postseason.

With the win, Chico improved to a 12-4-2 record on the year, including a 1-0 in the CCAA Championship tournament.

On Monday afternoon, the NCAA will air its selection show as teams are chosen to move forward into the Division II postseason. To access Monday's 4 p.m. selection show, go to www.ncaa.com/liveschedule.

"Overall, I felt like we had an excellent game," said head coach Mike Dibbini. "We had a game plan and the women stuck to it. We had a lot of chances, but Chico played very well and capitalized on their opportunity."

The first half proved to be a true defensive struggle, as the score remained at 0-0. Thanks to a solid effort put forth by the Broncos, the Wildcats' three shots were unable to find the net. CPP had a total of seven shots on goal itself, yet neither team was able to gain a first half advantage.

CCAA Defensive Player of the Year Alison Sauve showed her colors as she collected three shots to lead the Broncos' offensive threat. Rachel Killigrew recorded two of her own.

Heading into the second half the Broncos found a spark that pushed them to shoot 11 times. As hard as CPP may try, the Chico defense held firm and blanked the Broncos through the end of regulation play.

In the first overtime, the Broncos found themselves on the defensive as the Wildcats offense began to fire shots at the net. The overtime provided a 4-0 shot tally in Chico's favor. However, the shots didn't prove to be fruitful as the score at the end of the first overtime stood at 0-0.

The second overtime saw only one shot for either team, and that was the game winning shot in the Wildcats' favor. A foul just outside the Broncos' box gave Chico an advantageous opportunity that they capitalized on. Megan Tabler took the kick and found Lindsey Dias open who sent a header past the Broncos' keeper.

Throughout the match, the Broncos had a number of quality saves and a number of painstakingly close shots. Ricki Ives earned four saves in the game, including a couple on thrilling attempts by the offense to put a point on the board.

When all was said and done, Sauve led the Broncos with five of the 18 shots on the Chico goal. Stacey Atwater provided four shots of her own and Edith Dominguez, Rachel Killigrew, and Daisy Duran added two apiece. Hailey James, Hannah Leu, and Arika Ontiveros claim the remaining three shots.

"I feel like our season took off as it did due to the leadership of the team," said Dibbini. "Our team has evolved and grown together as a team, I am very proud of them and what they have accomplished."

On Monday, the NCAA will host its annual selection show to determine the field that will play in the Regionals and beyond.

"Looking forward, with a potential NCAA regional selection," Dibbini said, "we know we have to stay mentally focused and prepared. We will take each practice one at a time and go from here, we have a couple of days off to get some rest and regroup."
