BURNABY, British Columbia – On a road trip to the great white north, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured an 89-80 victory over the Clan of Simon Fraser University.
The win improves the Broncos to 2-2 on the season, while the Clan now owns a 2-1 record.
In a season high performance,
Ariel Marsh added 27 points to the CPP scoreboard with an 8-for-16 tally from the field, including four triples and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. The senior also added five assists and two steals in the game.
With a team leading 10-for-19 count from the floor,
Jada Blackwell provided 23 points in the Broncos win. The Rancho Cucamonga native led the CPP squad with seven rebounds and also added two steals.
The first half started in the Broncos' favor as a jumper by Blackwell dropped in and gave the visitors the first lead. Both regional contenders from last season, the first half showed the two teams' tenacity. In the first half, all eight of the games' lead changes occurred.
Four separate times the Broncos saw at least a five-point run, with their biggest run of the half coming with eight-straight and putting the Broncos up by seven. Prior to that run, the Clan held their last lead of the game.
Heading into halftime, CPP held a nine-point lead, as the score stood 53-44 in its favor.
Half number two began in the same way as the first, with a bucket by Blackwell. A couple of runs by SFU and the Clan brought the game to the closest spread it would see with the score at 71-69. Eight straight points in favor of the Green and Gold and the Broncos earned a lead that the home team could not come back from.
Ten more points in CPP's favor and nine in the Clan's and the final score of the game was 89-80.
In total the Broncos recorded 10 steals in the game and forced 18 turnovers. CPP's largest lead was 14 points after a layup and a subsequent point after by Blackwell put CPP up 87-73 with 2:05 remaining in the game.
The Broncos next game will be on December 5th at 5:30 p.m., as they continue the road trip and travel north to Hayward to play the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay.
