Comeback Attempt Falls Short in 3-2 Loss

POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie up the game count and force a fifth frame, but the Broncos ended up falling 3-2 to Humboldt State on Friday night at Kellogg Gym.

The Jacks secured positive results in the first two games by an identical score of 27-25 on each occasions. Behind tough blocking from the team and powerful hits by Deanna Blane, CPP rallied to take the third 25-19 and roll in the fourth 25-14. Humboldt reversed the momentum in the fifth though, cruising to a 15-8 result to finish the win.

With the result, the fifth-place Broncos fall to 11-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) as they stand two wins behind Humboldt and L.A., squads that own even records of 13-6. CPP will play its final home match of 2014 on Saturday and it'll be Senior Night at Kellogg Gym, with the Broncos honoring Roxanne Cardona, Lauren Jones, Tatiana Martinez and Elle Moffatt.

Blaine, a freshman from La Habra Heights, totaled 19 kills and 13 digs Friday while adding four blocks and four service aces. Blocking and serving proved to be successful aspects to Friday's match for CPP as they totaled 22 block assists and 15 aces. That ace total fell just four shy of matching the school record.

After falling behind 2-0 through the first two games, the Broncos stepped up their level of play in the third frame. Alexa Hasen knocked in back-to-back aces to force a HSU timeout with the score 18-13 in favor of the home team. Lauren Jones fired in a big hit to end that game at 25-19.

Blaine added a few more aces in the fourth and the Broncos put together a huge run on Zoe Herrera's serve, rallying for nine-straight points. Although CPP pulled out the fourth game, the Jacks proved to be too tough in the fifth as Nicole Bewley lifted the HSU down the stretch with a pair of blocks and a key kill.
