POMONA, Calif. - With a 2-0 start to conference play, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team -
ranked 25th nationally - looks to build on that momentum Friday with a 6 p.m. home game against UC San Diego.
In the middle of a busy Finals Week on the CPP campus, the Broncos are also preparing for the resumption of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action.
CPP's final two games of the calendar year will be against UCSD, with the Kellogg Gym game in Pomona on Friday and then a RIMAC Arena contest in La Jolla on Sunday, Dec. 21. The Broncos will then return to action on Jan. 2 with another CCAA home game against Chico State.
At 4-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play, CPP is one of five teams still undefeated in CCAA action. The Tritons enter this weekend's action at 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Based on scoring average, the Broncos boast the second-best offense in the CCAA at 77.7 points per game. CPP has been the league's most efficient team in terms of shooting percentage, going 49.7 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from three-point range. The Broncos' field-goal percentage ranks at No. 4 nationally in the NCAA Division II level.
2014 Regional AccoladesAt this Friday's game in Kellogg Gym, fans will be able to take photos with the Broncos' 2014 Women's Basketball West Region championship banner and trophy.
Lovett Can't MissIn last Saturday's 78-61 road win at Cal State Monterey Bay,
Ashley Lovett went 8-for-8 from the field and scored a season-high 18 points. With a field-goal percentage of 66.0 so far this season, Lovett ranks sixth nationally for that statistic.
Alumni MattersWith five national titles and 20 CCAA championships, the Broncos' women's basketball program has plenty of history. After this Friday's game at Kellogg Gym, CPP will be hosting an alumni social for past and present members of the women's basketball program. Any questions or comments can be directed at assistant coach
Reyana Colson (
rncolson@cpp.edu).
In looking further ahead in the schedule, the Broncos will be hosting a 30-year reunion for the 1985 national title team on Jan. 3 at Kellogg Gym. With a 5:30 p.m. tipoff, CPP will be taking on Cal State Stanislaus. All members of the 1985 championship squad are invited to bring their family and friends as the Broncos honor their achievements.
All CPP alumni should also circle the date of Saturday, Feb. 21. In addition to being Senior Night against Cal State Dominguez Hills, it'll also be Homecoming for the entire CPP campus. The day will start with an 11 a.m. baseball doubleheader and conclude with the basketball doubleheader at Kellogg Gym starting at 5:30 p.m. There will be plenty of other activities, including carnival rides and a concert.
