SEASIDE, Calif.- The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team earned a 78-61 victory over the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night. The win gives the Broncos their second win on the weekend, keeping them undefeated at the beginning of their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
With the win, the Broncos improve to a 4-2 tally on the season thus far including a 2-0 mark in the CCAA.
The Otters have the reverse mark, with a 2-4 overall, and 0-2 in conference.
On the Broncos' squad, three players gained double digit points in the game, with
Ariel Marsh and
Ashley Lovett leading the way with 18 apiece.
Tyler Woods also reached double figures with 13 points of her own.
After the game started, CPP was first on the board with a layup from Woods. She was answered with a three by Jenna Bandy, the Otters' point leader for the game. A bucket by Lovett was next to give the Broncos the lead 4-3, and from there the visitors never looked back.
Through the game, the Otters carried the lead for a mere minute and 35 seconds. After the basket by Lovett,
Jada Blackwell followed with a layup of her own, and the Broncos carried the lead for the remainder of the game.
Both squads went on a few runs, but CPP maintained the advantage throughout. The Broncos largest run in the first half was a seven-point streak which included a shot from beyond the arc and a jumper for
Mian Dingle, and a jumper for Lovett.
Heading into halftime, the Broncos had nearly doubled CSUMB's score, with the board reading CPP 36, Otters 19.
At the onset of the second half, there was a spark of sorts for the Otters, as a few runs for the home team put them a mere seven points back of the Broncos. Those points are largely on the back of Jenna Bandy who put up 28 points on the night.
Try as they might, the Otters were no match for the nationally-ranked Broncos, as the green and gold clad team shot 57.7 percent from the field, going 30-for-52. The defense held CSUMB to a 38 percent from the field, with only 19-of-50 shots dropping. The game ended with a score of 78-61 in favor of CPP.
The largest lead CPP held in the night was a 19-point advantage. Six Broncos caught the opposition sleeping, with the team earning six steals through the game.
The Broncos will return to action on Friday Dec. 12, as they host the UC San Diego Tritons at Kellogg Gym at 6 p.m
