Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Double-Doubles Lead CPP to 82-71 Victory!

POMONA, Calif. - After two Broncos earned double-doubles, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured a 82-71 victory over the UC San Diego Tritons on Friday night at Kellogg Gym.

With the win, the Broncos improve to a season tally of 5-2, which includes a perfect 3-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). After opening the season with two unfortunate losses, the Broncos have won five-consecutive games.

The Tritons have fallen to a 1-2 mark in conference, and have posted a 3-5 record on the year thus far.

As if it isn't difficult enough for one person to get a double-double, the Broncos had two members of their squad reach the mark. Mary Williams was first to ascend to 10 and 10 as two free throws gave her 10 points to add to her 10 rebounds. The double-double marks the first of her collegiate career. She finished the game at 10 rebounds and 12 points.

After Williams reached the mark, Jada Blackwell added a board to reach 10, coupled with her game-leading 29 points, and we have a shoo-in for player of the game. Going 12-for-18 from the field, Blackwell finished with 29 points, 11 boards, one block, and one steal.

With the two double-doubles, it marks the second-consecutive season the CPP squad has had two players earn a double-double in the same game.

Tyler Woods added 15 points, as her 7-for-8 performance on free throws made her deadly from the line. She added six assists, and led the Broncos with three steals. Lauren Goecke matched Woods for the team lead in assists with six of her own as well.

The game began with both teams showing their defensive prowess as neither was able to get a huge jump on the other. The game went back-and-forth until the clock showed 14:31, at which point a Blackwell triple broke the tie and the game wide open for the hometown squad.

A layup for the Tritons brought them back within one but the Broncos would never let it get closer.

Woods would add a layup, and another from beyond the arc for Blackwell and the game would enter its first timeout with the Broncos leading 17-11.

With a team efficiency of 15-for-32 from the field in the first half, the Broncos entered the half with a nine-point lead and the scoreboard reading 39-30.

The second half saw a lot of the same action from CPP, as a 14-for-31 tally from the field added another 43 points, and showed the final shooting percentage for the Broncos at 46 percent.

The Tritons and Broncos will meet again in nine days when CPP travels to RIMAC Arena on Dec. 21, to challenge UCSD in La Jolla. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m. and will be the first of a CPP and UCSD doubleheader with the men's basketball squads playing afterwards at 4 p.m.
