POMONA, Calif. – Two more wild comebacks. Two more walk-off wins.

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team provided a pair of thrilling finishes Saturday as the Broncos swept a doubleheader from Cal State Monterey Bay to stay undefeated at 9-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Trailing 7-5 entering the ninth inning of game one, CPP rallied for three scores to win it. Bo Walter kept the rally alive when he avoided an Otters' double play by sliding safe into first base. Later in the inning with two outs, freshman Steven Andrade lined the walk-off hit down the leftfield line to score Walter.

Somehow, game two - scheduled for seven innings - proved to be even more exciting. The Broncos let a 2-0 lead slip away in the top of the seventh and then the Otters recorded the go-ahead run in the ninth. Monterey registered two quick outs but after pinch hitter Nick Cooksey delivered an infield single, the CPP offense came alive.

Matt Muñoz contributed the game-tying RBI off a double and then David Armendariz knocked the walk-off single to right-center. With the nailbiting wins, the Broncos have taken a 3-0 series lead over an Otters' squad that swept CPP 4-0 last year. In the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason poll, Monterey Bay ranked 18th nationally while the Broncos held the No. 37 spot.

RJ Shanks and Andy Amaro earned the wins with stellar relief performances for the Broncos' bullpen.

Game 1 Box Score | Broncos 8, Otters 7

CPP took a 4-1 lead into the middle innings of game one after a big two-run double from designated hitter Brennen Salgado. The Otters stormed back to take a 5-4 edge, plating four runs in the sixth as two scores came off a single by Blake Grant-Parkes.

After Broncos' starter Steven Farnworth finished his outing at 5.2 innings and six strikeouts, the CPP bullen took over and got scoreless performances from Jake Menzhuber, Amaro and Shanks.

In what proved to be a key run late in the game, Cooksey delivered a two-out RBI in the eighth to trim the Monterey lead to 7-5. That's where the top of the order took over for the Broncos in the ninth as the host squad got singles from Muñoz, Chris Carlson and Joseph Eusebio. Walter showed tremendous hustle in beating a throw to first on the game-tying fielder's choice and then Andrade ended the game with a single down the line.

Game 2 Box Score | Broncos 4, Otters 3 (9 inn.)

Game two of Saturday's doubleheader featured a great pitching duel between Broncos' sophomore Cody Ponce and Otters' junior Jeff Owen. Owen allowed just one hit but issued six walks as CPP managed to scrape a run across in the second before adding another in the sixth.

Ponce fired six strong innings, scattering five hits and striking out one hitter while keeping the Otters scoreless. He turned it over to the Broncos' bullpen and although Austin Boyle and J.J. Franklin allowed one run apiece in the ninth as CSUMB evened the score, CPP didn't back down from the extra-inning challenge.

After the Otters kept their momentum going in the top of the ninth with an RBI single from Mark Hurley, the Broncos encountered two quick outs in the bottom half of the inning. Down to its last chance, CPP got back-to-back singles from Cooksey and Trevor Magno before Muñoz delivered a key double to tie the score at 3-3.

Armendariz completed the doubleheader sweep with a walk-off hit to right center. It marked the Broncos' fourth walk-off the season in nine wins. Two of the game-winning hits have come from Andrade while Armendariz and Cooksey have added one apiece. Six of CPP's nine victories have been one-run results.
