Box Score | SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team committed a season-high 23 turnovers Saturday at San Francisco State as the Broncos were dealt a 78-63 defeat by the Gators.
The result snaps the CPP win streak at six games and it marks the Broncos' first road loss in San Francisco since 2009. With Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills also losing Saturday though, CPP's first-place lead remains at three wins with just four regular season games to play.
With an 18-4 overall record and a 15-3 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Broncos will return to Kellogg Gym with a chance to secure the conference's regular season title.
CPP shot 51 percent in the first half of Saturday's game but turned the ball over 12 times in the first 20 minutes to help the Gators take a 41-40 lead into halftime. Junior center
Jada Blackwell knocked down seven of her eight first-half field goal attempts. She finished the game with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth-straight double-double.
Leticia Galarza scored the first basket of the second half - a three-pointer - and that started a 7-0 run for SFSU. The Gators' lead widened to double digits just a few minutes later and the host SFSU squad outscored the Broncos 37-23 to put the game out of reach.
Junior forward
Ashley Lovett turned in another strong performance at the post position as she recorded her second-consecutive double-double effort. The Murrieta native totaled 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Ariel Marsh joined Blackwell and Lovett in double figures with 14 points.
Four Gators' players finished with 10 or more points, including a 19-point effort from Lauren Varney as she also grabbed nine rebounds in the contest.
CPP encountered a tough time getting going from three-point range as the visitors knocked down just four of their 18 attempts at that range. Saturday's result is just the second road loss of the season for the Broncos, who will challenge local rivals Dominguez Hills and L.A. in the final homestand of the regular season this coming week.
Thursday's game against the Toros will be part of Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night at Kellogg Gym and then Senior Night will be held on Saturday.
