Game 1 Box Score | Tritons 6, Broncos 5
Game one of Saturday's doubleheader featured four lead changes between the Broncos and Tritons and the contest ultimately resulted in another walk-off finish.
CPP jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks in large part due to doubles from
Chris Carlson and
Bo Walter. UCSD got its first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, when Troy Cruz lined a double down the leftfield line to bring in Nick La Face.
The Tritons took advantage of two CPP errors in the fifth, plating three runs on just one hit to take a 4-2 lead. The margin stayed at that distance until the top of the ninth, when the Broncos put together a dramatic three-run rally with two outs.
After a groundball double play cleared the bases and put two outs on the board in the top of the ninth,
Jason Padlo and
Steven Andrade delivered back-to-back singles to start the rally.
Nick Cooksey tied the game with one swing on a 1-2 count, lining a single to center that brought in Padlo and Andrade. Then Magno contributed the go-ahead hit on a 1-2 count, also driving a single to centerfield.
As the Tritons managed their own rally in the bottom of the ninth, CPP went to the bullpen before the host UCSD squad tied the game on a steal home by Gradeigh Sanchez with two outs. With two-straight singles, including the game-winner from Garrett Tuck, the Tritons pulled out the 6-5 win.
Game 2 Box Score | Broncos 6, Tritons 4
The second half of the doubleheader featured a pitching duel between the Broncos'
Jake Menzhuber and Cruz of UCSD. Keeping their pitch counts low in the seven-inning contest, Menzhuber and Cruz limited the opposing offenses under the lights at Triton Ballpark.
The Tritons put together a quick rally in the third, when Tyler Howsley started it off with a one-out walk on four pitches. Erik Lewis followed with an RBI triple and then UCSD added another score off a Broncos' error.
CPP capitalized on timely hitting and smart baserunning in the fifth inning. Magno knocked a single up the middle with one out and Matt Munoz followed with a double down the line. Armendariz then cut the Tritons' lead to 2-1 with a sacrifice fly to score Magno.
With UCSD taking a 4-1 edge into the Broncos' final turn at the plate, Cooksey and Andrade got the visitors started with consecutive hits. Thanks to a walk, wild pitch and error, CPP had tied the score 4-4 just as the Tritons were recording their first out of the inning.
Armendariz delivered a double on a 2-2 count to put the Broncos ahead 5-4 and Carlson drove an RBI single into center on a 1-2 count to give CPP an insurance run. Boyle retired the Tritons in order during the bottom of the seventh.
