Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The 16th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team cruised to its fourth-straight victory Thursday, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 58-38 at Kellogg Gym.
Facing the top defense in the league, CPP's offense managed just a 35-percent showing from the field. But it was the Broncos' defense that stole the headlines.
Monterey Bay's point total of 38 was the lowest this season for a CPP opponent. The visiting Otters' squad shot 20.8 percent on field goal attempts, including a dismal 2-for-19 from three-point range.
With the result, the first-place Broncos (16-3 overall) now have a three-win lead atop the conference standings. Cal State Dominguez Hills remains in second at 10-4 with one less game played.
Junior center
Jada Blackwell proved to be a key in CPP's defensive success Thursday as she collected three blocks while serving as a disruptive force in the post. She also finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds to earn her eighth double-double of the season.
Fellow third-year
Ashley Lovett contributed 14 rebounds Thursday after totaling 15 boards in the team's most recent game last Saturday.
Ariel Marsh joined Blackwell in double figures with 16 points, including a 7-for-7 showing at the free throw line.
CPP scored the first six points of Thursday's contest and never trailed through the entire 40 minutes of action. The Broncos pushed their lead to double digits before the midway point in the first half, using a 7-0 run to take a 16-6 advantage. That spurt featured back-to-back baskets from
Mian Dingle, who received assists from Marsh on both shots.
A jumper from CSUMB with 21 seconds left in the period trimmed the margin down to 29-16 heading into the intermission. Blackwell knocked down four-straight free throws early in the second half to reach the double-double mark and she ended up 7-for-10 at the charity stripe overall.
With 13:34 to play in second half, senior guard
J.J. Judge knocked down a three-pointer after a pass from Blackwell. That triple - the 131st of her career - moved Judge into sole possession of second place on the Broncos' all-time list for three-pointers made. Judge finished with nine points in Thursday's game while adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
CPP will return to action on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. game against Cal State East Bay. It'll be featured as part of the Homecoming and Family Weekend festivities on campus.
