Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – In a low-scoring series opener Friday, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team prevailed with a 3-1 victory over Dixie State at Scolinos Field.
Sophomore
Max Bethell earned his second win of the year, going five strong innings with six strikeouts and just one run allowed.
Austin Boyle was just as impressive in middle relief and
J.J. Franklin closed out the victory with his third save of the season.
It marked the first-ever win for CPP over the Red Storm as the Broncos had gone 0-5 through the series history. The two teams will resume this weekend's three-game set on Saturday with a 12 p.m. game. CPP Hall of Fame members Darrell Miller and Alan Fowlkes will throw out the ceremony first pitches.
In Friday's game, all of the scoring took place in the second inning. In the top of the inning, Dixie first baseman Tyler Blair - who finished with three hits on the day - opened the visitors' at-bat with a double. Donald Glover followed with a double of his own later in the inning to put the Red Storm on the board.
Junior leftfielder
David Armendariz helped the Broncos rally right back in the bottom of the second though as he started the inning with a double. Four-straight CPP hitters reached base consecutively later in the rally and a big two-run double came from
Trevor Magno with the bases loaded.
Matt Muñoz added an RBI single to push the Broncos' lead to 3-1.
Although Boyle ran into a bit of trouble in the sixth, he got a strikeout to end the inning as the Red Storm left three on base. Boyle finished with three scoreless innings in the outing while registering five strikeouts.
Between Boyle and Franklin, CPP retired the final six DSC hitters to avoid any threat of a comeback. Magno starred at the plate, going 3-for-3 with the two runs batted in.
