Box Score | ERIE, Pa. - Brighter lights. Bigger stage. A road-game atmosphere 2,400 miles from home. None of that stopped
Jada Blackwell and the Broncos on Tuesday.
The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team topped Edinboro in quarterfinal action, 81-61, marking the Broncos' first Elite Eight win since 2002. The result moves CPP (26-6) into a semifinal matchup on Wednesday against Bentley, a squad undefeated at 33-0 and ranked No. 1 nationally.
Tipoff for the Broncos' Final Four game is set for 5:30 p.m. Pacific (8:30 p.m. Eastern) and the game will be aired on CBS Sports Network (DirecTV 221, Dish TV 158, Comcast 854, Time Warner 1322).
The Erie Insurance Arena crowd of 2,149 featured mostly Fighting Scot fans making the short 21-mile drive from Edinboro but CPP received plenty of support from the St. Peter Cathedral students that the Broncos visited on Monday. In Pomona, fans packed the Bronco Student Center to cheer on CPP while watching the NCAA.com broadcast. Another viewing party will be held at the BSC on Wednesday for the 5:30 tipoff.
Inland Valley Daily Bulletin coverage of Tuesday's win includes a
game recap and also a story about the
BSC viewing party.
Blackwell scored 35 points Tuesday to match her season high as she went 10-for-13 at the free throw line and grabbed nine rebounds.
"That's why Jada is up for Player of the Year,' Broncos' fourth-year head coach
Danelle Bishop said. "I'm not surprised by what Jada did tonight. She's a phenomenal player."
Ashley Lovett pulled down nine boards as well while contributing 14 points.
J.J. Judge delivered clutch three-pointers and finished with 13 points of her own.
As a team, CPP totaled 20 assists for the second-highest total of the season. Junior guard
Tyler Woods led the way as an offensive catalyst, dishing out a career-best seven assists.
The Fighting Scots came out firing at the start of Tuesday's game, knocking down their first three-point field goal attempts. Two of those baskets came from Laurel Lindsay.
The Broncos' defense started to elevate its intensity while Blackwell went to work in the paint offensively. After a few of her early shots caromed off the rim and out, Blackwell sank consecutive layups to help CPP turn an 11-3 deficit into a one-possession game toward the midway point of the opening half.
With the Broncos gaining confidence in the Erie Insurance Arena packed full of Edinboro fans, Judge found her rhythm from beyond the arc as she delivered eight first-half points. Back-to-back triples from Judge helped put CPP in front and the Broncos slowly built on that momentum.
Late in the first half, Edinboro's defense caused some issues for CPP as the Fighting Scots stayed within striking distance. The Broncos ended up taking a 33-28 lead into halftime.
CPP became even more comfortable in the second half, scoring the first six points out of the break to push the margin to double digits. The Broncos' lead didn't fall below an eight-point gap the rest of the way.
After being held scoreless in the opening half,
Ariel Marsh scored eight points in the closing 20 minutes. A Marsh three-pointer at the 4:53 mark moved the score to 72-53 in favor of CPP. Blackwell scored 22 of her 35 points in the second half, dominating the inside game against the Fighting Scots.
Meanwhile, the Broncos' defense limited All-American Valerie Majewski to eight points with an 0-for-5 showing from three-point range. Aignee Freeland led the Edinboro offense as she posted a double-double performance of 18 points and 13 rebounds.
This marks CPP's 24th appearance at the NCAA postseason and the Broncos now own an all-time record of 55-18 at this stage. Through regular season and tournament games, CPP owns a program record of 899-316.
In Division II posteason history, the Broncos rank third all-time with their 55 victories. Tied for first in that category are Bentley and Delta State with 57 wins apiece. CPP is 1-0 all-time against Bentley, capturing an 84-83 double-overtime victory on March 24, 1989, in the semifinal round in Cleveland, Miss.
