Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Broncos Top 9th-Ranked Cal State LA in Overtime, 1-0

POMONA, Calif. – The soccer fans at Jesse Owens Field had withstood the brutal heat for 90 minutes of scoreless action on Sunday. The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team didn't waste much time getting on the scoreboard in overtime though as Alexander Turkson knocked in the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute to lift the Broncos over nationally-ranked Cal State L.A. in a 1-0 victory.

"I am very proud of our team's collective effort today," CPP head coach Yossi Raz. "Cal State L.A. is a very tough team and it was great to see our guys go into that environment with the right attitude."

It marks CPP's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2010 when the Broncos topped the same Golden Eagles' program, ranked No. 1 for Division II at that time. This week, L.A. held the No. 9 spot in the latest Top 25.

The exciting non-conference matchups will continue Thursday when CPP hosts Azusa Pacific for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Cougars could be featured in the next Top 25 poll as they defeated No. 2-ranked Simon Fraser Saturday.

The Broncos' defense put together a tremendous effort on Sunday and goalkeeper Fernando Pablo Quevedo recorded a career-high seven saves, six of which came in the second half.

CPP earned 12 corner kick attempts through the first 90 minutes, including 10 in the opening half, but couldn't find the back of the net in regulation. On the game-winning play, Jesus Tamayo and Daniel Garcia Jr. combined for passes to move the ball up the right side. A cross was sent over to the far side and Turkson came sprinting in for a one-timer volley that sent the Broncos home to Pomona victorious.
