Broncos Fall to Tritons 15-13 in 5th Set

LA JOLLA, Calif. - In a marathon match Wednesday at UC San Diego, the fifth set went wire-to-wire before the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team dropped a 15-13 result in the final frame.

After taking the first set 25-17, the Broncos dropped the second and third frames to the nationally-ranked Tritons. CPP didn't back down from the challenge though, capturing another 25-17 result in the fourth to even the match at one set apiece.

The Broncos jumped out to a 3-0 lead with Alexa Hasen contributing a pair of block assists in that stretch. UCSD chipped away at that advantage though and the two squads traded the lead later in the set. After CPP led 12-11 at one point, the Tritons went 4-1 the rest of the way to wrap up the five-set victory.

Four Broncos finished with double-digit kill totals, including a season-high 16 from freshman Deanna Blaine. Junior libero Zoe Herrera starred defensively as she collected 32 digs, also a season best. The CPP defense had a tough time slowing down the Tritons' Caitlin Brenton, who totaled 15 kills with just one attack error for a hitting percentage of .389.

The Broncos' serving prowess helped the visitors pick up the win in the first set. Nicoletta Stork and Blaine contributed service aces in that frame and Alina Smith served the final three points with Hasen adding a kill in that stretch. Senior Lauren Jones registered seven kills in that opening set.

The fourth frame, which resulted in CPP knotting the set count at 2-2, featured plenty of blocking from the Broncos. With Smith serving at a Broncos' lead of 24-17, Hasen and Stork combined for the set-clinching block.

With the fifth and final set starting with a pair of CPP blocks and a Blaine kill, the visitors seemed to have all the momentum. Trailing 7-3 though, UCSD rattled off a 4-0 run and reversed the momentum through to the final point.

The Broncos will return to action Friday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The match will take place in Darlene May Gym.
