Hasen, Stork Lead Broncos to Victory

POMONA, Calif. - Flashback a few years and you'd see the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team playing in Darlene May Gym. Fast forward to Friday night, and due to renovations in Kellogg Gym, the Broncos once again played in the gym dedicated to one of CPP's most revered coaches. In the end, the Broncos secured a 3-1 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

With the result, CSUDH dropped to 1-6 while CPP improved to a 4-3 record. Juniors Alexa Hasen and Nicoletta Stork starred offensively with Hasen posting a .471 attack percentage, 10 kills, and three service aces. Stork collected a .400 attack percentage, 12 kills, 16 assists, and 10 digs. Freshman Alina Smith finished as the assist leader for the night as she tallied 27.

By the end of the first set, the Broncos had shown that they came to play as they beat the Toros 25-11. CPP played like a well-oiled machine the first set, as they had five players with two kills. Stork, along with her two kills, added five assists.

CSUDH, so as not to be outdone, headed into the first timeout halfway through the second set with a 16-12 lead over the Broncos. CPP continued to chase the lead up to the very last point as they tied the Toros at 24 points, again at 25 points, once more at 26, but unfortunately could not pull off the win as Dominguez won the second set 28-26.

Set number three started out as CPP would like, as they led the Toros 12-6 entering into the first timeout. The trend continued as Pomona got two points for every Dominguez point into the second timeout, when the Broncos led 18-9. CPP didn't relinquish anything as they won the third set by 10 as the final was 25-15. Hasen and Stork continue to prove lethal for the Broncos as they recorded eight kills apiece heading into what would be the fourth and final set.

The last set of the night started with no clear leader emerging, as the score went back and forth for the CCAA opponents. CSUDH led the Broncos by two heading into the first timeout with a score of 13-11. The Broncos quickly came back and got the lead at 15-14, an advantage which they would carry the rest of the night. The fourth set was a narrow 25-21 victory for the Broncos.

The Broncos' next matchup is Saturday at Darlene May Gym at 7 p.m. It'll be "Remembering Sawyer Match" as CPP hosts Cal State L.A. The matchup will be held in memory of Sawyer Pennino, the late son of Cal Poly Pomona volleyball alum Kellie Pennino (2002-05). At the entrance to Darlene May Gym, CPP will be accepting donations to help support the Pennino family.
