POMONA, Calif. - Cal State L.A. entered Saturday's match with an unblemished conference record at 3-0 and plenty of momentum after a win at UC San Diego Friday.
The majority of the Saturday highlights came from the other side though as the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team played an inspired match and fought back from a 2-1 deficit to capture a thrilling 16-14 in the fifth and final frame. CPP trailed 11-5 in the fifth set before storming back for the win.
Returning to Darlene May Gym for back-to-back matches this weekend, the Broncos topped local rivals Dominguez Hills and L.A. to improve to 3-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CPP will play its next four matches on the road, starting with a Friday contest at San Francisco State.
Saturday's win over the Golden Eagles proved to be a team effort with four players recording 10 or more kills and five players totaling double-digit digs. Freshman
Deanna Blaine collected 16 kills and 12 digs, earning her fourth double-double performance in the year's first eight matches.
Christen Williams recorded seven block assists while adding 12 kills.
Also helping the defensive effort was junior libero
Tatiana Martinez, who registered a career-high 20 digs.
Zoe Herrera finished with 18 digs of her own and she's reached double-digit digs in each of the first eight matches of 2014.
CPP cruised to a 25-17 result in the opening set before falling in the second frame, 25-23. The Golden Eagles continued their momentum in the third, finishing with a 25-22 result. The Broncos enjoyed a nine-serve run from Herrera in the fourth, as that helped CPP take a 25-17 score to even the count at two sets apiece.
Despite the Broncos falling behind 11-5 in the final frame, CPP didn't back down and got a series of clutch kills from senior
Lauren Jones to help pull even at 13-13 and again at 14-14. A pair of late errors on L.A. helped the Broncos wrap up the 3-2 victory.
