SAN FRANCISCO - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team held a 2-1 set lead on Friday at SF State but ended up suffering a 3-2 loss with the host Gators storming back. SFSU captured a 25-19 result in the fourth frame and a 15-7 win the final set.
The Broncos fall to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Gators improve to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in league action.
Freshman
Deanna Blaine put together a breakthrough performance on offense, notching a season-best 18 kills to along with 18 digs and three block assists. She wasn't the only CPP player to perform well defensively as
Zoe Herrera led the squad in digs with 24.
Elle Moffatt provided 10 kills and a team-high six blocks.
The Broncos' defense couldn't slow down Jazmine Williams though as that Gator recorded 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .375. In the critical fourth set, SFSU held a slim 19-18 advantage at one point but rattled off five-consecutive points with two kills from Williams in that span.
CPP took a 3-2 lead in the fifth set when
Christen Williams contributed a kill, but the Gators dominated the remainder of the match by winning 13 of the next 17 points to walk away victorious.
The Broncos will resume their road trip with a Saturday 7 p.m. matchup against Sonoma State. The Seawolves are now 3-2 in CCAA play after topping UC San Diego on Friday.
