Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 22 CPP Defeats Tritons 2-0 in La Jolla

LA JOLLA, Calif. - In 2013, the Broncos had an overall record of 7-7-4. Thus far in 2014, through just eight games, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team has tied that number of wins after beating UC San Diego 2-0 on Sunday.

"I was super proud of the group today," head coach Yossi Raz said. "A lot of players had to step up and help prove the depth of our squad."

Heading into the game, the 22nd-ranked Broncos had allowed just one goal in seven matches. After three saves Sunday by Fernando Pablo Quevedo, the Broncos can add one more game to that as they have had seven shutouts on the season.

The first half was a battle of the defenses as only one shot on goal a piece was allowed for the Tritons and the Broncos. The teams headed into halftime with a 0-0 tie.

In the second half, Broncos' sophomore midfielder Adi Azran added his name to the list of scorers for the 2014 season as he found an opening in the goal in minute No. 58.

Azran found the back of the net as he was assisted by Eshel Chardon and Daniel Asor. That marks his first goal on the season, and goal No. 11 for the Broncos.

Less than three minutes later, the Broncos' goal leader, Christian Gonzalez Diaz, tacked on a security goal as he put CPP up 2-0 with 30 minutes to play. With that goal, Diaz reached a total of six goals in 2014, leading with half of the Broncos' 12 goals.

The win improves the Broncos to an overall record of 7-0-1 and 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.

"The recent CCAA schedule has been a very difficult one, and has tested the character of the team," Raz said. "We had an excellent result in one of the toughest environments in Division II. We are looking forward to the upcoming game against Chico State."

The Broncos will resume play as they travel up to Chico State on Friday. The Wildcats hold a 5-2-1 record after suffering a double overtime 1-0 loss at Cal State L.A on Sunday.
