CHICO, Calif. – The undefeated Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team, ranked at No. 14 nationally, continues on its record-setting course after securing a 2-1 win against Chico State on Friday.
"We competed against another of the toughest opponents the CCAA has to offer," said head coach
Yossi Raz. "We battled through the game and were excited to come out with that result.
The Broncos' win against Chico improves the squad to 8-0-1 overall on the year and a 3-0 record in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
The loss drops Chico's conference record to 0-3 while the Wildcats' overall mark is 5-3-1.
Chico gained the first advantage as they scored on the Broncos in the 20th minute.
At the end of the first half, the Wildcats held a 1-0 lead despite CPP having four shots on goal.
In the second half, the Broncos came out strong and scored on a corner kick by
Mathew Perez in the third minute of the half.
Alexander Turkson battled to get the ball in the net, however the goal came after one of Chico's own players accidentally deflected the ball past the goalie.
The tie inspired the Broncos to be the clutch team that they are and CPP's leading goal scorer
Christian Gonzalez Diaz found the back of the net for his
seventh goal of the season.
With the score in the Broncos' favor 2-1, CPP held the lead for the remainder of the game.
At the end of the game, the Broncos had a total of nine shots on goal to the Wildcats' two.
"There were moments that we felt that we were in control," said Raz. "But, there were also many moments that Chico was a better team. However, we fought hard and we are happy to get the win. We are excited and looking forward to the next challenge as we continue representing the university and the community the best that we can."
CPP's goalkeeper,
Fernando Pablo Quevedo, had another save in the game, which raised his season total up to 28.
The Broncos continue their season at home on Sunday against the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
