Volleyball Nets Pair of Comeback Wins on Opening Day

SEATTLE – Featuring a balanced attack, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team secured two comeback wins Friday on day one of the 2014 season.

After falling behind 1-0 to Seattle Pacific, the Broncos rallied for a 3-1 afternoon victory behind a 17-kill performance from senior Lauren Jones. In an evening contest, CPP trailed Western Oregon 2-1 but stormed back to capture a 3-2 win.

Three Broncos recorded 20 or more kills on Friday through the two matches. Jones totaled 26 kills while Hannah Harrer added 24 and freshman Deanna Blaine delivered 23.
Alina Smith collected 58 assists at the setter position and junior libero Zoe Herrera shined defensively, recording 28 digs.

CPP will play its final match in Seattle on Saturday with an 11 a.m. first serve against Dixie State, a team out of the PacWest Conference.

Match One: Broncos 3, Falcons 1 (Box Score)

In the 2014 opener, CPP volleyball captured a 3-1 victory over tournament host Seattle Pacific. The contest featured an impressive performance from Jones, who tallied a match-best 17 kills while posting an attack percentage of .538.

CPP actually lost the first set 25-19 but Jones helped keep it close with kills on the final four points of the set for the Broncos.

In the second set, CPP built a wide lead with an eight-point serving from Blaine. The Whittier Christian High School graduate put together a stellar debut, collecting 11 kills and seven digs in the match. In the second set, the Broncos led 18-6 at one point before taking a 25-13 result.

The third set remained close throughout and after being tied 25-25, Jones and Blaine provided the decisive kills off assists by Smith. CPP captured the fourth set with relative ease, 25-20, as Alexa Hasen and Nicoletta Stork combined for the match-clinching block.

Match Two: Broncos 3, Wolves 2 (Box Score)

In the second match of the day, the Broncos battled Western Oregon. During the first set, CPP trailed 23-21 but rallied for four-straight points. With the score tied 23-23, Blaine tallied back-to-back kills and then Elle Moffatt recorded the final kill to close out the two-point win.

The second set also featured a back-and-forth struggle, but this time it was the Wolves finishing with the positive result. Christen Williams evened the score at 22-22 but WOU bounced back with three-consecutive points.

After the Wolves took the third set to capture a 2-1 advantage, Williams continued to elevate her level of play and guided the Broncos to a 25-17 result in the fourth to force a fifth frame.

Hasen provided plenty of highlights in the final set. Her second kill of the frame started an 8-1 for CPP and she finished with four kills in the set while adding a block alongside Stork. The Broncos cruised to a 15-6 result to wrap up the victory.
