POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured an 80-56 victory over Sonoma State on Saturday night at Kellogg Gym. The result kept the Broncos' undefeated home record intact at 6-0.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 9-3 overall and 7-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The top five teams in the conference all picked up wins Saturday and second-place CPP kept pace with first-place Humboldt State (8-0).
Tyler Woods notched a career-high eight assists in the contest and was one of four Broncos with double-digit points. Woods also bolstered the defensive effort, earning four of the Broncos' 11 steals.
Ashley Lovett added a double-double to the statbook as she earned 10 points and a dozen boards.
CCAA points leader
Jada Blackwell provided another double-double as well, going 7-for-11 from the field for 21 points to go along with 12 rebounds. In case the rest of the season hasn't been a fantastic enough performance,
Ariel Marsh led the Broncos in scoring with 24 points on 10-for-23 shooting.
Through the 40 minutes of action, the Broncos committed only 11 turnovers while forcing 18 from the visitors. CPP also outrebounded the Seawolves 44-34 while limiting the visitors to 32.7-percent shooting.
After SSU jumped out to a 4-3 edge, the Broncos caught fire with a 9-0 run that featured seven-consecutive points from Blackwell. Just a few minutes later, a second three-pointer from Blackwell pushed CPP's advantage into double digits. The margin continued to widen and the Broncos led 41-24 at halftime.
The Seawolves managed to cut the margin down to 10 points with 13:38 to play in the second half. CPP rallied to finish the game strong though and Marsh helped the Broncos build that momentum, scoring all 11 of the team's points between the 6:28 and 3:20 marks.
Jordan Henry scored the game's final point, knocking down a free throw to settle the score at 80-56.
Having completed a four-game homestand, the Broncos will return to action Friday with a 5:30 p.m. road contest at Cal State Dominguez Hills. CPP is tied with the Toros for second place in the CCAA.
