POMONA, Calif. - In a stellar comeback victory, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team proved true the old adage "It's not over until it's over." Securing the 81-76 victory over the Chico State Wildcats was no small feat.
The win over Chico provided the Broncos with their sixth win on the season. CPP now holds a 6-3 tally, which includes a 4-1 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Chico dropped to just below .500 on the season as the loss places them a 4-5 on the season with a 1-4 conference record.
Seniors
Ariel Marsh and
Jada Blackwell proved to be a dynamic duo for CPP as they combined for 50 points, 29 for Blackwell and 21 for Marsh. Blackwell also went 10-for-13 from the free throw line and provided three blocks for the Broncos. Marsh, one of the CCAA's leading three point shooters, sank three from beyond the arc.
Tyler Woods registered 14 points in the game, and a 9-for-10 effort from the line certainly contributed to that. Woods also contributed three assists and three steals.
Lauren Goecke also added three steals. As a team CPP bested the Wildcats in the steal category, earning 11 to Chico's 4.
Despite an early four points in the Broncos' favor, the visitors held their own and quickly went on an 8-1 run that ended with the CPP trailing by three. Nearly the whole rest of the first half was advantageous for Chico as they added two points to the scoreboard for nearly every Bronco one.
With 3:53 remaining on the first-half clock, Chico's leading scorer, Hannah Womack, added two free throws to give the Wildcats an 18-point lead. The Broncos trailed 39-21, but sports are a fickle thing and CPP was about to prove it.
Prior to entering halftime, the Broncos managed to tack on some more points to trail the Wildcats by 10.
Coming out of the half, CPP came back to life, and proceeded to steadily gain on the Cardinal-clad Wildcats. The Bronco defense provided opportunities for its offense and the offense capitalized on them. In the second half, CPP recorded 26 boards, and 48 points.
With 1:51 on the clock, the Wildcats would score their final basket, also giving them a seven-point advantage over the Broncos. CPP's leading scorers Blackwell, Marsh, and Woods gave the home squad their final 12 points to earn the win.
A timely foul in CPP's favor placed Marsh at the line with the score sitting 76-75 Wildcats. Two expertly guided shots later and the Broncos held the lead for the first time since the game's first minute. Four successful free throws from Blackwell concluded the 81-76 result.
CPP returns to action Saturday night at 5:30 in the first game of a doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus at Kellogg Gym. The game will also be the 30-year celebration for the 1985 National Champion women's basketball team.
