Broncos Coast to 86-59 Win Over Stanislaus

POMONA, Calif. - In a fashionable tribute to the 1985 National Championship team, which Saturday night was held in honor of, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team has started off the 2015 calendar year off right. The Broncos earned back-to-back wins the first week of January after securing the 86-59 victory over the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors on Saturday.

The win provided the Broncos with their seventh win on the season, improving them to an overall 7-3 tally and moving them up to 5-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Stanislaus, with the defeat, carries a 3-7 record with a 1-5 mark in conference play.

In what has seemingly become a CPP mainstay, Broncos' seniors packed plenty of power to ensure the CPP victory. Ariel Marsh posted 26 points in a 11-for-18 effort from the field. Jada Blackwell recorded 13 points and three blocks. Jordan Henry, came in strong off the bench as she collected a career-high nine points, sinking all three of her shots from the arc.

Blackwell and Marsh dealt out three assists apiece, while Lauren Goecke and Tyler Woods dished out five to their Green and Gold teammates. CPP recorded eight steals in the contest.

After an opening layup by Blackwell, the Broncos never looked back. The home squad held the advantage throughout the entire game.

The first half saw CPP's stellar defense hold the Warriors to 25 percent shooting from the field, while the Broncos' offense carried a 41.9 percentage, going 13-for-31. Heading into halftime, CPP held a seven-point advantage, posting 32 points to the Warriors' 25.

CPP's largest run came in the second half with a 10-point stretch, complete with a Marsh bucket from beyond the arc. In the second half the Broncos shot 62.5 percent from the field and with Henry's threes, 80 percent from long distance.

The Broncos performed exceptionally well after gaining an offensive board, scoring 21 second-chance points.

CPP's next contest will extend the homestand as the Broncos host San Francisco State on Friday, Jan. 9, at 5:30 p.m. for the first game in the doubleheader. As part of the "Pack the Gym" promotions, the first 100 CPP students at the game will receive a Habit Burger voucher and a Carl's Jr. foam finger.
