POMONA, Calif. - With a massive 85-52 victory, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team gave Humboldt State its first loss in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Five Broncos scored double-digit points and two recorded double-doubles.
Ashley Lovett and
Mary Williams both secured double-doubles. Lovett collected 10 points and 11 boards while Williams added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Ariel Marsh led the Broncos offensively with 20 points,
Tyler Woods registered 13 points and
Erin Hagan shot 75 percent to post 10 herself.
Also with double-digit rebounds was senior
Lauren Goecke, as she secured 11 boards en route to the CPP win.
Friday marked Military Appreciation Night, and the crowd proved to be a sizable one as the Broncos and Jacks faced off as two teams from the top of the conference.
With the win, CPP improves to a 11-4 tally on the season, complete with a 9-2 CCAA mark. HSU gets its first conference loss, which holds them at 10-1 and a 14-2 record on the season.
From the get-go the Broncos knew it would be a tough battle. The Lumberjacks hadn't yet lost to a CCAA team and they came to Kellogg Gym with a No. 25 national ranking.
"We didn't focus on the rank," said Marsh. "We knew that they still had to beat us, and we weren't going to let them."
The Broncos held HSU to a 26-percent shooting from the field, allowing just 19-of-73 shots to find the net.
On the other end of the court, the hometown squad fired off a 46.8-percent from the floor, draining 29-of-62 shots.
The Broncos had a number of runs in the game, the largest of which totaled 11 points for CPP in the waning minutes of the first half. The last bucket of that run pushed the Green and Gold to exactly double of HSU's score. CPP entered halftime with a 44-22 margin over the Lumberjacks.
CPP recorded a few more big runs in the second half, totaling eight points in two of them and nine in the third spurt. Try as they might, the Jacks were unable to go on more than a five-point spree throughout the course of the game.
The Broncos' final run also proved to be last points for either side in the game, Goecke and
Alyssa Benton provided CPP with the last eight points that gave the game its final 85-52 result.
The Broncos return to play Saturday night as they host the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino at Kellogg Gym at 5:30 p.m. It'll be Greek Spirit Night with several entertainment performances.
