POMONA, Calif. - With a three-pointer in the first half,
Ariel Marsh added her name to Cal Poly Pomona's 1,000-point club. Her 20 points helped fuel the Broncos' 61-57 victory over Cal State San Bernardino.
Marsh was one of three Broncos with double-digit points on the night. Her 20, combined with
Ashley Lovett's 13 and
Lauren Goecke's 10 helped to secure the home town win.
Lovett also recorded nine rebounds on the night.
Jada Blackwell registered nine boards as well to add to her nine points.
From the field, Marsh shot 50 percent, draining 6-of-12, complete with four triples and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Those four successful shots from beyond the arc move the senior closer to second all-time for the Broncos as she sits at third with 146 treys in her career. Second place is former teammate
J.J. Judge at 149.
With the victory, the Broncos improve to an over 12-4 mark on the year, which includes a 10-2 record in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUSB now carries an 8-4 tally in conference and has recorded 12 wins and four losses on the season.
"I felt like we came out with a little bit of a chip on our shoulder," said head coach
Danelle Bishop. "The first half we held them on defense and were hitting shots. In the second half we let off the gas pedal a bit, but picked it back up and stayed poised down the stretch. I'm really proud of them for being relentless on both ends and getting two W's against two of the top teams in our conference."
The Broncos came out with a purpose and from the first layup by Lovett to the ending buzzer in the second half, CPP held the lead. To kick things off at Kellogg Gym, the Green and Gold squad provided six-straight points. Those points were followed by a basket for the Coyotes and then an 11-3 run in the Broncos' favor.
CPP continued to add to their lead steadily, reaching a 20-point spread twice in the game.
The Broncos entered halftime with a 16-point lead and the scoreboard reading 36-20.
In the second half the Coyotes found a spark and ran with it. The visitors cut the CPP lead to a mere two points in the final minute. The largest run for CSUSB was 12 points and included three triples.
In an attempt to get the ball and tie the game, the Coyotes forced a foul on Goecke and she put down both of her free throws to give the game its final 61-57 result. Through the game, Blackwell and Lovett bolstered the inside defense as they collected three blocks apiece. CPP limited San Bernardino to 33.3-percent shooting.
The Broncos return to conference play on Friday as they host the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters at Kellogg Gym at 5:30 p.m. The night will mark CPP's 'Pink Zone Cancer Awareness Game' so come out and wear pink in support of the cause.
