POMONA, Calif. – This coming Friday and Saturday, a week after Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball secured head coach
Greg Kamansky's 300th career win, the Broncos will host the San Francisco State Gators and the Sonoma Seawolves.
Last Saturday's 60-57 victory over the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus pushed CPP into a five-way tie for second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Broncos carry an 8-3 overall record with a 4-2 mark in conference. The Gators' record is an identical 4-2 in the CCAA and 6-4 on the season.
Friday's doubleheader in Pomona will be part of the "Pack the Gym" festitivies, which will feature Habit Burger vouchers and Carl's Jr. foam fingers to the first 100 CPP students arriving to the 5:30 p.m. women's basketball game.
The men's basketball game on Friday will be a battle of two superb defenses. CPP ranks first in the conference with just 59.4 points per game allowed. Following closely behind, SFSU allows a mere 59.6 scoring average. On the national leaderboard for defense, the Broncos are at No. 4 and the Gators are fifth.
On the offensive side, the Broncos have two of the top five scorers in the conference. Senior
Terrence Drisdom leads with a scoring average of 17.0. Fellow Bronco, a Lake Forest native,
Jordan Faison notches an average a 14.6 points in each contest.
Drisdom also holds the fifth-place spot in the CCAA with 6.2 rebounds per game and fourth with 0.9 blocks per game.
Barry Bell has contributed an average of 3.5 assists per game, which places him at No. 5 in the conference.
Saturday, the Broncos will take on the Seawolves of Sonoma State, again with a doubleheader and a 7:30 p.m. start.
Sonoma leads the conference with a 5-1 mark in the CCAA while holding an overall record of 8-2. The Seawolves will head to CPP after taking on UC San Diego at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla on Friday.
Kamansky HonoredAt the conclusion of Saturday's home win over Cal State Stanislaus, Kamansky posed for a picture with the Broncos' team while he held a ceremonial 300th victory poster. In his 15th year leading the program, Kamansky owns a career coaching record of 300-120 for a winning percentage of .714. The CPP defense has ranked No. 1 nationally in each of the last two seasons while being featured at least within the top six for the past six years.
Fourteen of Kamansky's 15 seasons have been winning campaigns and the Broncos have recorded 20 or more wins in eight different seasons. His winning percentage (.714) ranks 12th among active NCAA Division II coaches.
