SF State and Sonoma to Challenge the Broncos


POMONA, Calif. – With a pair of wins last weekend, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team will host San Francisco State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. After taking on the Gators, the team will set its sights on Sonoma State on Saturday.

Friday will mark the Broncos' annual "Pack the Gym" night. CPP and the Gators will be playing a doubleheader, as the first game is the women's 5:30 start the men will play at 7:30 p.m. The first 100 Cal Poly Pomona students who arrive will receive a Habit Burger voucher and a Carl's Jr foam finger.

The Broncos hold a 7-3 overall record, which includes a 5-1 mark and a tie for second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). SFSU has experienced a tough start to its season with a 0-6 conference record and a 0-10 season standing.

Heading into Friday's matchup, the Broncos lead the CCAA with 76.5 average points per game and a 46.2 shooting percentage from the field. CPP also ranks at No. 1 in a few other categories, including highest three-point percentage, most assists, and least number of turnovers per game.

Seniors Jada Blackwell and Ariel Marsh hold the No. 1 and No. 3 spots in the CCAA for points per game with scoring averages of 20 and 17.1, respectively. Blackwell has ranks second in total blocks with 14 blocks.

At fifth place on the conference leaderboard for rebounds per game is Ashley Lovett, who earns 7.6 per game. Lovett also sits at No. 3 in the conference in field goal percentage with 57.3. Lauren Goecke is featured at No. 2 in the assist category as she has dished out an average of 4.3 per contest.

This will be the first time this season that the Broncos and Gators have crossed paths. The last time the two met - Feb. 15, 2014 - the Gators bested CPP 78-63 in San Francisco. In the all-time series, the Broncos hold a large advantage, winning 37 times to SFSU's nine.

On Saturday at 5:30 p.m., the Broncos will move on to the Sonoma State Seawolves. The Seawolves currently hold a 6-4 overall mark, with a 4-2 tally in the CCAA.  The Broncos won both of the matchups with Sonoma last year, and hold the all-time series advantage at 29-9. SSU will first play the Tritons of UC San Diego on Friday at 5:30, then head up to Pomona.
