TURLOCK, Calif. – A battle of two titans in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) ensued on Sunday, and the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team emerged victorious. The matchup was between the Broncos and second-place Stanislaus State. The final score of the contest at Warrior Stadium was 2-0 CPP.
"I'm proud of the team effort as it demonstrates great character to g on the road and get W's in the CCAA," said head coach
Yossi Raz. "We are looking forward to coming home and playing in front of our community."
The Green and Gold earned their sixth win of the season and now hold an overall 6-1-3 record in 2015, complete with a 3-1-2 mark in CCAA play. The Warriors record in conference matchups is now 5-2-1 and their season tally stands at 10-2-1.
Through the vast majority of the match, both teams remained scoreless. The first half came and went and despite nine total shots being taken, neither squad was able to find the net.
In the second half of the contest, a full 30 minutes went by before the score changed from 0-0. CPP's
Mathew Perez was fouled inside the Warriors' penalty box and was able to send a shot by the hometown goalkeeper, posting his first goal of the 2015 season. His goal was in the game's 77th minute.
Less than three minutes later,
Patricio Yrizar, who scored his first goal as a Bronco a couple weeks ago, gave the Green and Gold its second goal of the contest. After a jumble in front of the Warriors' goal, Yrizar picked up a loose ball and placed the Broncos' second goal with a shot inside the box.
CPP's squad outshot the home team by a margin of 14-8; five of the Green and Gold's shots were on goal. The Warriors posted three shots on goal, and the Broncos' keeper
Fernando Pablo Quevedo collected three saves. CPP's shot leader in the contest was Perez as he fired four separate times at the Warrior goal. Second to Perez was
Christian Gonzalez Diaz, who launched three shots of his own.
The Green and Gold will return home to Pomona to host the Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. The game is part of a two-game home stand for the Broncos. The contest at Kellogg Field will mark CPP's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
