POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a 3-0 home loss to UC San Diego on Sunday at Kellogg Arena.
Leading the Broncos' attack was freshman
Kristen Hamlin, who collected nine kills. Defensively,
Samantha Figueroa totaled 14 digs while
Alexandria Bollier added 10.
The Tritons jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the opening frame, using a couple kills from Meagan Wright in that span. Wright finished the night with 14 kills. UCSD ended up taking the first set, 25-14.
CPP managed to pull ahead 12-10 in the second set after a kill by
Alina Smith. The two teams traded points but it was the Tritons pulling away late, going on a 7-0 run to complete the 25-16 result.
UCSD carried that momentum into the third and final set, cruising to an 11-4 advantage. The Broncos pulled to within a 16-14 deficit after a double block from
Kirsten Rutledge and
Alexa Hasen, but the Tritons still finished with a 25-15 result to complete the 3-0 sweep.
Hasen tallied two blocks and in the setting game, Smith finished with a team-high 14 assists.
CPP will return to action Thursday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State East Bay. It'll be "Breast Cancer Awareness Night" so be sure to wear pink to support the cause.
