SEASIDE, Calif. – With a goal by freshman
Sydney Yates in the ninth minute of the game, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team secured a 1-0 win against the hometown Cal State Monterey Bay Otters on Friday.
The goal was the third by Yates in her debut collegiate season and her second game winner while donning the Green and Gold.
CPP's Broncos improved to an overall tally of 8-4-2, while owning a 5-3-1 tally in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Otters, with the loss now carry a 5-10-1 tally thus far on the 2015 season, complete with a 2-7-1 showing in the CCAA.
The game's solo goal came with the game clock reading 8:24 as Yates received a pass from
Melissa Martinez. Both the Broncos were behind the hometown Otters' defensive line and Yates, a product of Rancho Buena Vista High School, deked the keeper and sent a shot between her legs to find the back of the Otter's net.
With her assist on the goal, Martinez now holds two on the season, and as mentioned earlier, Yates' goal was her third of the season.
The home team did have a slight advantage in total shots taken, recording eight to the Broncos' six. In goal for the Green and Gold
Ricki Ives racked up a pair of saves in the contest as CPP's defense secured its fourth shutout of the season.
CPP will return to action on Sunday as they challenge the San Francisco State Gators at Cox Stadium in San Francisco. The gators secured a 1-0 victory over the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes on Sunday and currently carry a 7-6-3, 3-4-3 CCAA record into Sunday's showdown.
The Broncos share a third-place tie with Cal State L.A. and Chico State in the conference standings. The CCAA Tournament, with the semifinal and final rounds to be held at Cal Poly Pomona in the beginning of November, will feature the top six teams in the conference.
With the first and second place team earning a bye, the conference's third place team will host its sixth place squad, and fourth will host fifth to determine what two teams will challenge the conference leaders at Kellogg Field.
