Broncos Fall to San Francisco State Gators

SAN FRANCISCO -  The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team lost to the hometown San Francisco State Gators on Sunday. The final score at Cox Stadium was 3-2. Scoring for the Broncos was Rachel Killigrew and Hailey James.

The loss dropped the Green and Gold to a season tally of 8-5-2, complete with a California Collegiate Athletic Association record of 5-4-1. The Gators improved their conference standing to 4-4-3 en route to an 8-6-3 tally on the season.

In the first half, the Gators jumped in front as they scored twice in half, leading the Broncos into the halftime break at 2-0.

Just under 10 minutes into the second half CPP struck. On an assist by Reanne Macon, Killigrew fired a shot from 20 yards out that made its way to the back of the Gators' net. The goal was Killigrew's first of the season and second in her career at CPP.

Nearly 20 minutes would go by before the next goal was scored, and unfortunately for the Green and Gold, it was in favor of the home team. In the game's 79th minute, SFSU added to their lead with the scoreboard reading 3-1.

Ten minutes later, the game's final goal would be scored as the Broncos would pull one shot back on a goal by James. The goal, her third of the season, was unassisted and came on a 15 yard shot that made its way over the Gators' goalkeeper's head.

The Green and Gold will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 29 as they host the Humboldt State Jacks at Kellogg Field. Game time is set to begin at 12:30 and will be the only regular season meeting of the two squads this season.

After the Broncos host the Jacks, they will host their final regular season contest of 2015 with the Sonoma State Seawolves making their way to Kellogg Field. The game on Saturday will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will celebrate the members of CPP's squad that are playing their final season of eligibility for the Broncos in 2015.

The Broncos' standing puts them in a good spot to earn a ticket to the CCAA Tournament, with the semifinal and final rounds to be held at Cal Poly Pomona in the beginning of November.

With the first and second place team earning a bye, the conference's third place team will host its sixth place squad, and fourth will host fifth to determine what two teams will challenge the conference leaders at Kellogg Field.
