CHICO, Calif. – With the second-consecutive five-set victory, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team topped the Chico State Wildcats. The Broncos had four players post double-digit kills in the match, two with double-digit assists, and four with double-digit digs.
As if just having double-digit kills, assists, or digs isn't impressive enough, CPP's own
Nicoletta Stork posted a triple-double in the contest. She secured 14 kills, 24 assists, and 10 digs for the Green and Gold.
CPP now holds a 11-6 record on the season, complete with a second-place tying 7-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Wildcats' record now stands at 14-6, with a 6-4 mark in conference play.
Joining Stork on the double-digit kills list were CPP-leader
Alexa Hasen with 17,
Kristen Hamlin with 15, and
Deanna Blaine with 12. Hasen's 17 kills are also coupled with a match-leading .533 attack percentage.
Leading the Broncos with 33 assists in the match was
Alina Smith, Stork's 24 was second to her. The four defensive double-digits for the Green and Gold in the digs category were
Zoe Herrera, whose 25 puts her even closer to the all-time CPP lead spot.
Second in the digs category with 16 was recent defensive standout
Samantha Figueroa. Following suit was Blaine, whose 14 digs gave her a double-double in the match and Stork with her 10.
The first set in the match went to the hometown Wildcats 27-25. No games of the evening were easily won as the two squads were very evenly matched. The opponents traded points throughout the entire set, with a string of four-straight being the maximum number of points secured. Hasen posted the Broncos' high of six points in the set.
Set number two fell in the Broncos' favor as CPP won it 25-22. An early 6-2 run for the hometown Wildcats forced the Green and Gold to take a step back and catch their breath. It was well-played on the Broncos' part as they immediately posted four-straight to tie it at 6-6. The points and the lead went back-and-forth from there as neither team was able to gain more than a three-point lead in the remainder of the set.
After the long break, the third set went to Chico 25-23. This set was arguably the closest of the match. At 15 different points the scoreboard was tied. The max number of points in a row for either side was three. The game's final tie was at 23-23 but two Wildcat kills boosted them over the Broncos to take the set.
The largest victory margin came for the Broncos in the fourth set as they won it 25-19. The set remained within three points and CPP found themselves trailing 14-11 before posting four points to take the lead and put the home team on the defensive. A few more points for the Broncos and they led Chico 19-16. The Green and Gold carried the lead the rest of the set and posted a match-high five-straight to lead 24-17. CPP's final point came on a Stork kill.
In the fifth and final set, the Broncos secured their win, topping the Wildcats 15-11. The scoreboard was tied at eight different points in the set, the final time being at 9-9. The Broncos posted four-straight and never looked back. The final point in the match was a kill by Blaine on an assists from Smith.
The Green and Gold will stay on the road as they head to Stanislaus State to challenge the Warriors in Fitzpatrick Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m.
