POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team will start its 2015-16 season this Friday with a 7 p.m. home game against local rival Azusa Pacific.
It'll be part of a four-team tournament hosted at CPP's Kellogg Arena. With Point Loma, APU and Cal State Dominguez the other three squads involved, the Broncos will host Point Loma on Saturday at 6 p.m. to wrap up the event.
This week's two matchups should present an exciting challenge for CPP, a squad that went 1-3 last year against PacWest opponents. APU is picked to finish second in that league while Point Loma is ranked at No. 5.
After finishing 2014-15 with a 21-9 record and an appearance in the West Region title game, the Broncos are poised for a memorable campaign in 2015-16. Leading the way for CPP is center
Mary Williams, the one senior on this year's roster. The junior class includes returning guard
Erin Hagan and a transfer from San Joaquin Delta,
Marshanique Hall.
Friday's 7 p.m. game against the Cougars of APU will also mark the collegiate debut for several of the Broncos' freshman class. This year's roster features five first-year players, including
Jordyn Shane,
Atlantis Babineaux,
Jackie Ricketson,
Monay Mariscal and
Brijanae Knox Cooper.
The first 100 fans arriving to Friday's game will receive a free team poster. Just before tipoff, Broncos' long-time supporters Tom and Lois Wood will be honored. Then at halftime, the CPP women's basketball alumni will be recognized.
After this week's two games, the CPP homestand will continue next Friday, Nov. 20, when the Broncos host Montana State Billings.
Head coach
Danelle Bishop enters her sixth season with the CPP program. She owns a record of 108-43 while with the Broncos and she's moved her career head coaching record to 246-128. Bishop's coaching staff includes first-year assistant
Rhema Gardner.
