POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball dropped their season opener 70-44 to the Cougars of Azusa Pacific. The game was both squad's first in the CCAA/PacWest Challenge.
The Green and Gold were picked to finish fifth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) earlier this month in a poll distributed amongst the coaches in the conference. APU was second in the polling amongst the PacWest teams, trailing only last season's runners up for the NCAA DII National Title, the Cal Baptist Lancers.
Freshman
Jordyn Shane led the Green and Gold in the point category as she sank four shots and four free throws for a total of 12 points. Another newcomer to the CPP squad
Priscilla Brooks was second to Shane with nine points of her own.
Brooks was also the Broncos' standout player defensively as she tallied six offensive rebounds and 10 defensive boards for a game-leading 16. She also provided her teammates with the team's only block and two of the squad's four steals.
With the first points in the game going to the Cougars, the Green and Gold were always playing catch-up. The first three buckets and five points were for the APU squad.
Monay Mariscal of the Broncos provided her Bronco teammates with their first basket of the season with a layup in the paint.
The APU squad proved its worth in Kellogg Arena though as they continued to add on points in the contest. Their largest lead was a 29 point advantage with just under two minutes to play in the game.
Looking at the box score, the Broncos found a bit of a groove in their shooting and improved their shooting accuracy by 20%. Both teams earned 26 points in the paint with the Broncos winning the category in the first and third quarter and APU taking the even numbered quarters.
CPP will play its second game of the season on Saturday as they host the Point Loma Sea Lions in Kellogg Arena. The Sea Lions topped the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros in overtime in the first match of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge. Gametime on Saturday for the Green and Gold is set for 6:00 p.m.
