Women's Basketball Falls to Point Loma

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered a 72-54 loss to Point Loma on Saturday night at Kellogg Arena. The game wrapped up a four-team, two-day tournament hosted by the Broncos.

CPP falls to 0-2 on the season. Leading the Broncos' offense was Alyssa Benton, who demonstrated stellar shooting from inside and three-point range. Benton finished with a team-high 14 points on 4-for-6 shooting.

The Broncos shot well overall from all areas, including the field goal and free throw areas. Point Loma outshot CPP by a few percentage points and also committed fewer turnovers.

Priscilla Brooks led the team in rebounds with six while Jordyn Shane collected four assists to pace the Broncos in that category.

At halftime, CPP trailed 35-30. The Broncos started the third quarter on a 9-5 run though, capped off with a layup from freshman Jackie Ricketson. A minute later, Mary Williams dropped in a layup to give CPP a 44-43 edge about midway through the period.

The Sea Lions responded with an 8-0 run of their own, pulling in front 52-44 at the end of the third quarter. The visiting Point Loma squad kept a modest advantage through the fourth quarter, using more three-point shooting to outpace CPP. Point Loma was led in scoring by Alex Brunk.

The Broncos will host another set of games on Friday. The first contest will feature Simon Fraser against Cal State San Bernardino at 5 p.m. Then, CPP will take on Montana State Billings with a 7 p.m. tipoff at Kellogg Arena.
