SEASIDE, Calif. – With a 3-0 sweep in the regular season finale Saturday at Cal State Monterey Bay, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team has completed California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action with a 12-8 record.
The win moved the Broncos into a tie for fourth place in the conference standings and as a result of winning the tiebreaker, CPP will enter the CCAA Tournament as the No. 4 seed.
On Thursday at 12 p.m. at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla, the Broncos will take on the fifth-seeded San Francisco State. For the eight-team, single-elimination event, UC San Diego is serving as the host.
On Saturday in Seaside, the Broncos' defense limited the Otters to .222 hitting as CPP racked up 54 digs. Leading the way was senior
Zoe Herrera, who tallied 23. Kristin Hamlin collected a team-high 11 kills while
Christen Williams paced the team in blocks with four.
Nicoletta Stork registered 22 assists while
Alina Smith collected 16 of her own to help with the setting.
The Broncos held off a late CSUMB rally in the first to wrap up that frame with a 25-21 result. CPP trailed 26-25 in the second set but rallied for three-straight points to build on their set lead. In that second frame, Hamlin recorded a kill to tie it 26-26 and then
Alexa Hasen and
Samantha Figueroa followed with the next two kills.
With that momentum, the Broncos cruised to a 25-15 result in the third and final set.
Next week will mark the first CPP playoff appearance since 2008. It will also represent the third time that the Broncos and Gators will have met this season.
