POMONA, Calif. – As the 2015-16 season has started off with a pair of wins, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team heads to San Diego to challenge the Sea Lions of Point Loma on Wednesday. The matchup will be held in Golden Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
To kick off this season, the Broncos topped the Notre Dame de Namur Argonauts 84-46, then turned around and defeated the Azusa Pacific Cougars 79-72 on their home court. The all-time series between CPP and Point Loma stands at 6-3 in CPP's favor.
In last year's lone meeting, the Point Loma squad topped the Broncos 62-60 as they were able to make a layup with just three seconds remaining to secure the win.
Looking into Point Loma's performance thus far this season, the Sea Lions have secured an even 1-1 record. They fell in their season opener to the Wolves of Western Oregon, 82-76, and then turned around and topped Saint Martin's 74-59.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Broncos will host Winona State at Kellogg Arena on Saturday in the team's home opener. The matchup will start at 7:00 p.m. and the first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free schedule poster courtesy of Cal Poly Pomona athletics.
The all-time series with Winona State is minimal. The squads have only met three times, with the last being in head coach
Greg Kamansky's first season at CPP in 2000-01. The Broncos are leading the series at 2-1, including the 2000 season opener that ended up as a 75-70 victory for CPP.
The Broncos are led offensively by
Jordan Faison, who earned the Player of the Week accolade from the CCAA after his opening week performance in which he tallied 40 points on 17-for-26 shooting. As a team, the Green and Gold are shooting .554 and their stellar defense has limited opposing teams to an average of 59 points per contest.
All the members of the CPP squad that have played have tallied points, and seven have double-digit points. Behind Faison on the points leaderboard are
Jeremy Dennis and
Daylan Lawrence, who have scored 24 and 23 points, respectively. In the teens for points is freshman
Jordan Ogundiran with 19,
Barry Bell with 18, and
Francois Tchoyi and
Quentin Taylor with 13 and 12.
Defensively, the Broncos have secured 63 rebounds to the opposing team's 48. Faison leads the board category as well with 14 himself, and just behind him with 12 is
Chris Sullivan.
